Some of the most beautiful images happen when everything comes together at the last minute. That's exactly what happened when I had the chance to photograph Megan (@megan_machado) and Shayne at the iconic Swan House in Atlanta as part of a styled shoot by Honey Bee Retreats (@honeybeeretreats) and let me tell you...these photos turned out so gorgeous. Like, the kind of gorgeous that I knew immediately these were the photos I was going to edit as soon as I got home from the styled shoot.

Megan and Shayne hadn't done their engagement photos yet, so when the opportunity came up to include an engagement session in this styled shoot, it felt like the perfect alignment of timing and luck. And the Swan House was the perfect backdrop for their photos.

Why the Swan House is One of Atlanta's Most Magical Engagement Locations

If you're an Atlanta couple looking for an engagement session location that feels genuinely cinematic, the Swan House at the Atlanta History Center should be at the very top of your list. This 1920s Italian Renaissance-style mansion is dripping in stunning architectural details. The carved stone corbels, arched niches, wrought iron balustrades, cascading stone staircases, and lush gardens bursting with climbing roses all come together to create a dramatic and cinematic backdrop for your engagement session.

As an Atlanta wedding photographer, I'm always chasing light and texture, and the Swan House delivers both in abundance. The pale limestone facade acts as a giant reflector, bathing subjects in soft, even light. The layered balconies create natural depth. And the grounds — especially when the yellow climbing roses are in bloom — are absolutely dreamy.

The Session: Last-Minute Magic

The styled shoot had been planned in advance, but Megan and Shayne joining was a happy, last-minute addition. They showed up, immediately comfortable with each other and the camera, and we just let it unfold. Megan wore a stunning white floral appliqué mini dress that felt both bridal and editorial — perfectly at home against the stone architecture. Shayne was sharp in a linen suit, and together they looked like they'd been posing on European balconies their whole lives.

We moved between the upper and lower balconies, the grand exterior staircase, and the rose garden along the side of the mansion. The light was soft and hazy — the kind Atlanta does so well in the warmer months — and it wrapped around them beautifully in every shot.

booking your engagement session in atlanta

If you're an Atlanta couple planning your engagement photos — or if you're getting married in the Atlanta area and want portraits that feel elevated, editorial, and full of genuine emotion — I would love to connect. I specialize in light-filled, romantic photography for couples who want images that feel like them: real, warm, and beautiful.

And the grounds extend well beyond the balconies — one of my favorite hidden gems on the property is the Swan House fountain, tucked into the lower garden terrace. The weathered stone walls, the reflecting pool, the classical urns and cascading steps — it's an entirely different mood from the mansion facade, quieter and more intimate. Megan perched on the ledge while Shayne stood at the base of the steps, and the resulting image felt like it could have been shot somewhere in the Italian countryside. That's the magic of this place.
